V-Rings play an important role in sealing shafts against unwanted foreign materials such as grease, dirt, dust, and moisture that might otherwise penetrate an oil seal. These solid seals also serve to keep lubricants inside with the shaft and bearings. Although they are beneficial in a range of applications for their durability and the strength of their tight-fitting grip, V-Rings are particularly useful in situations where the shaft is not perfectly aligned. This is because these axial face seals have very wide tolerances, enabling them to adapt to movement in the shaft while still performing well and creating a uniform shape.

A V-Ring can function as a seal lip or as a centrifugal disc. Commonly, applications use V-Rings in conjunction with oil seals, radial shaft seals, or another seal type as a pre-sealing component for shafts and bearings.

Proper use of V-Rings helps improve the longevity of the oil seal and bearings by reducing the amount of wear and tear these parts experience during use. The dynamic friction decreases when the peripheral speed increases as a result of centrifugal force. Particularly when applied with rotary shaft seals, V-Rings offer tight, high-performance grip and impressive seal durability.

V-Ring seals are easy to install. They require almost no disassembly, as their degree of elasticity allows users to stretch them over unit components. These seals are also highly economical. They save both time and money by not requiring a significant amount of costly counter surface preparation or any installation struggles, and a single V-Ring component will easily fit many shaft sizes. As long-lasting rings, they will not need to be replaced often, providing additional cost-efficiency.

V-Rings perform well in dry or wet running applications, and they provide minimal amounts of heat build-up. They also have a low torque drag. This makes V-Rings very versatile, enabling them to function reliably even at high speeds. With a variety of sizes available, they can fit rotary or oscillating shafts with equal efficiency.

V-Ring Materials

Depending on the needs of the application, we have a variety of V-Ring materials available.


Also referred to as Nitrile rubber, Buna-N, and NBR, Buna is an excellent material for applications with exposure to extreme temperatures. It maintains high levels of performance in temperatures ranging from -40° C to 100° C.


Another material that does well in warm environments, silicone is highly durable, offering resistance to UV light, oxygen, and ozone. It is rarely reactive to chemicals, and it provides low thermal conductivity. It is worth noting, however, that gas can permeate silicone, which can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the application.


A synthetic fluoropolymer elastomer, Viton® is ideal for rugged applications. This high-performance rubber is highly resistant to even extreme heat and harsh environmental conditions, functioning optimally between -15° F and 450° F. Viton also withstands exposure to oxygen, hydraulic fluids, fuels, organic chemicals or solvents, mineral oil, aromatics, and more.


Urethane’s material composition is a combination of urethane resin and hardener. This plastic provides particularly good resistance against acids, bases, and mineral oil.





Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)

EPDM is ideal for applications involving exposure to water, alkalis, fireproof hydraulic fluids, or ketones. However, there are several substances that are incompatible with this synthetic or M-class rubber material. These include:

  • Aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Aliphatic hydrocarbons
  • Majority of oils
  • Kerosene halogenated solvents
  • Gas
  • Acids
